The connections between Irish American masculinity and the typeface Papyrus have never been explored. Until Now.

This zine is a deep dive into Irish American Male Consciousness TM and how it's strategic deployment mirrors the use of Papyrus, a typeface developed by Irish American Male Chris Costello in 1983, when he sought to create an alphabet that showed the world what ancient spiritual texts on papyrus paper might look like if written in English.

Everyone knows papyrus. You see it on Arizona Ice Tea Ginseng Flavor, in the movie Avatar, on the signs of local businesses, and on a lot of Irish and other Indigenous group's official branding. The Irish American Male encounters a special difficulty in translating his innate Irishness ie. Savagery TM into palatable forms in modern day NYC -- where many of my case studies occurred.
